We use a wood fired boiler to heat all of our buildings and provide hot water on tap too!
We get slab wood, a waste by-product, from a local saw mill using our dump trailer to season for our boiler, which means we can heat and have hot water for less than $200 the ENTIRE SEASON!
We repurposed an old, dairy, bulk tank for our boiler to circulate about 350 gallons of water at 180-200F. This allows us to capture all that heat in storage as a 'battery'. By using copper coils as a heat transfer, we are able to circulate hot water to heat all of our buildings thru radiators with only a pump as the only moving part! We also take our well water and preheat it for potable sink usage which saves us even more on utilities!
Most of us would not want to do a job if we were told we wouldn't get paid for the job for years! But that is exactly what we do when we age Cheddar and our own cheeses!
Our cheddar is aged for years naturally in an underground, concrete cave! This allows us to use the earth's natural constant temperature of about 46-47F in our 44th parallel north to age our cheddar with ZERO refrigeration, ZERO power, and ZERO maintenance! All of that adds us to years of savings!
Our RAW cheese, Recherche, requires a bit more hands-on attention than Cheddar!
So we built a double-wall, double-insulated cheese aging building. While most buildings insulate R-21 on the walls and R-38 on the ceilings, our cheese aging building was built with an offset double-wall that enables us to have R-42 on the walls and R-76 on the ceiling!
All of this reduced temperature loss helps us maintain a constant temperature and humidity perfect for aging our own cheese!
Our houses are completely off-grid!
Using a mixture of Solar power inverted to provide A/C power; Amish stoves to heat, cook, bake, and provide hot water; and D/C Solar refrigeration, we are able to keep our living costs almost non-existent.
Our submerged well pump is a very special 3-stage D/C Grundfos pump that uses very little power even on startup due to the gradual 3-stage starting process.
